A.R Rehman.. "Tansen" of new era...

A.R Rehman
A.R Rehman is probably the best music composer India has and now the world is at his feet with Academy Awards nominating him for three Oscars. But AR Rahman is also, undoubtedly, the most humble achiever in the industry. “God has been really kind as I didn’t expect this,” Rahman said after his nominationMusician, composer and winner of Golden Globe Award for the music of the film Slumdog Millionaire.

"Our scintillating sounds have moved billions for ages. Our musical gurus could make the oceans throb and the skies pour nectar to quench mother earth's thirst. But we have waited for eight decades for this sort of recognition," Rahman.

Only two Indians have ever won an Oscar – costume designer Bhanu Athaiya for Gandhi (1982) and arthouse director Satyajit Ray who received a lifetime achievement award in 1992. However, with three Academy Award nominations this year for Slumdog Millionaire – one for overall score and for two songs – Chennai-based composer A R Rahman looks likely to be the third. He's also up for the Best Music award at Sunday night's Baftas

Allah Rakkha Rahman (Tamil: ஏ.ஆர்.ரகுமான்) (born January 6, 1967 as A. S. Dileep Kumar in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India), is an Academy Award nominated film composer, record producer and musician.Early Days Rahman was born in a musically affluent family and he started playing the piano at a very young age. His father, R K Shekhar was a composer, arranger and conductor for Malayalam movies. Unfortunately, his father died when he was only 9 and the family started renting out musical equipment to make ends meet. Young Rahman then joined noted composer Ilayaraja’s troupe as a keyboardist and computer programmer. After working with several renowned composers like Ilayaraja, Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy, Zakir Hussain and L Shankar, he set out on his own to compose jingles and scores for popular Indian television features. During this period, he also obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music, London and went on to set up his own in-house studio called Panchathan record- inn at Chennai which is arguably Asia’s most sophisticated and hi-tech studio.

A. R. Rahman is married to Saira Bano. The couple have three children, Khadijah, Rahima, and Aman.

In 1991, noted film maker Mani Ratnam offered Rahman a movie ‘Roja’ which was a run-away success and brought nationwide fame and acclaim to the composer. The movie also led Rahman to receive the Indian National Award for the Best Music Composer, the first time ever by a debutant. Time magazine rated the soundtrack of ‘Roja’ in their top ten compilations of the all time 100 best movie soundtracks of the world.

Rahman is the 1995 recipient of the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for contributions to music. He was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his first West-End production. A four time National Film Award winner and conferred the Padma Shri from the Government of India, Rahman has received six awards for Best Music at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and eleven awards for his scores at the Filmfare and Filmfare Awards South each. In 2006, he received an honorary award from Stanford University for contributions to global music.[31] For his score of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman won the 2008 Critics' Choice Award, the Golden Globe[32] and the British Academy Award. He has also received three Academy Award nominations in 2009—Best Original Score and two different Best Original Songs.
He was also nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award (The Hilton Award) for Best New Musical of 2002, “Bombay Dreams,” performed at the Apollo Theatre, West End, London, and on Broadway in New York City.

"I am already deliriously happy about the nominations. But the happiness will be manifold if and when we get at least one Oscar," Rahman
